Use Sticky Notes with Windows XP

by riyas 47 comments

Have a look at a few small, handy things which aren’t part of windows. The first one will be Sticky Notes-the virtual equivalent of writing down tasks and reminders on paper and sticking somewhere around you. If you need this with windows XP, you have to download and install freeware. But, you can use sticky notes in windows XP without installing a third party tool.

It will take only five simple steps. Let’s do this in any computer within a few minutes. I thing this sticky notes will be an unavoidable tool in your office computers.

1. Create a file type:

Open ‘my computer’. Click on ‘tools’ in the menu bar and select ‘Folder Options’ under the ‘file types’ tab click on the ‘new’ button to crate a new file extension. Type in ‘stk’ (short for sticky notes, of course) in the ‘create new extension window’ and hit enter.

2. Assign an action and an application:

In the folder options menu click on stk file and hit advanced button. A new window-Edit File Type-will is opened. Click the’ new’ button to assign and action for our purpose. Under ‘action’ type in ‘open’ and under ‘application user to perform action’ type in ‘notepad.exe’. Close the window.

3. Select an icon:

Click ‘change icon’ button in the already opened ‘Edit file window’. Select an icon and type in ‘Remind me’ just before ‘change icon’ button. Click ok. Close all windows opened.

4. Editing the registry:

Open registry editor by navigating Start-Run-Type in ‘regedit’-Click ‘OK’. Collapse the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and right click on ‘stk’ and select ‘new-key’ and type in ‘ShellNew’. By selecting ‘ShellNew’ right click ‘new-string value’ and type in ‘NullFile’. Exit the registry editor.

5. Use this tool:

Right click on free space anywhere in explorer or on the desktop will show up ‘Remind Me’ under new. Select this option. Type in anything you want remind and stick it on anywhere in the free space. And here, the ‘sticky notes’. We have actually created a notepad file. The reminder you typed in is actually a file name.

Dear author, please ignore Anonymous cowards. I appreciate your knowledge in the OS and your good intention as well. Thanks.

While this is notepad, it does offer a solution to a problem having some type of visible noting on the desktop. I appreciate the fact that I don't need another piece of software running on my computer. Now I'll just have to make sure I don't have a noisy background. Thanks

what the hell...wasted time

this is notepad, why to do all these steps if a notepad already exist in windows? Sorry to say but the solution is worthless.

Anonymous said...

a minor modification would prove this solution pretty useful to all of us who do not want bloated software installed. install notedpad++(a very light and useful freeware)and use it instead of notepad.exe. when the notepad++ window opens, just resize it and place it in a preferred corner of your screen and press F12. notepad++ has a very useful mode - "post-it" mode which is invoked by pressing F12 or going to View->Post-it.

I appreciate the original idea but I liked the notepad++ idea more. thanks.

Anonymous said...

this is crap - this is just a procedure to create your own extension and opening it with existing application, does not change the application behavior.

Anonymous-thanks for the Notepad++ tip

the result is not worth the trouble- nice steps though

I Found this method really useful!! Thanks very much person-whoever-wrote-it!! XXXXX :P

Price is right, steps are simple.
But you need to have permission to access your registry which not all corporate users have.

Thank you for taking the time to write this up.
Dissing people who try is just plain rude!

Not able to achieve...useless

useless.....

Sticky notes is something that remains visible on your desktop. So that you can quickly see whats urgent for you.

I guess the author isn't aware of this fact. But even the name S T I C K Y N O T E S conveys the purpose of it.

Anyway, nice effort to waste others precious time knowingly or unknowingly.

Thanks

Thanks for sharing - next best thing to stickynotes for XP.

For Step 3, I found a decent stickynote icon at
http://www.google.com/imgres?q=sticky+note+icon&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1040&bih=690&tbm=isch&tbnid=imN98JmHSx0kCM:&imgrefurl=http://www.veryicon.com/icons/system/longhorn-r2/&docid=qnV0F8CGAzMc1M&w=48&h=48&ei=lZteTvjiH8qpsALh5d0T&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=342&vpy=394&dur=720&hovh=48&hovw=48&tx=83&ty=23&page=1&tbnh=48&tbnw=48&start=0&ndsp=13&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0

I downloaded it and then used this tool

http://www.coolutils.com/Online/Image-Converter/

to convert it from .jpg to .ico so I could use it as the icon for this shortcut.

It is really nice to find way of doing things on our own without going for freeware or software. I liked it and instead notepad I used notepad++. On using post-it, the file stays on top of all the windows open. Is there any way we can make the page stick to desktop but should be behind other windows..!!? I would appreciate the response..
